Linen is a forgiving fabric to wash, but a few habits make a real difference over years of use.
Wash cold, on a gentle cycle. Cold water is gentler on the fiber and on any natural dyes. A gentle cycle reduces mechanical stress on the weave.
Skip the fabric softener. Linen softens naturally through wear and washing; fabric softener coats the fiber and actually reduces its natural breathability over time.
Tumble dry low, or line dry. High heat is the fastest way to weaken linen fiber over repeated cycles. Low heat or air drying takes a bit longer but adds years to a garment's life.
Don't over-pack the wash. Overcrowding increases friction between garments, which is one of the more overlooked causes of premature wear.
None of this is complicated, which is part of the point, the fabric is meant to be easy to live with, not high-maintenance.
